A small note before we begin: As I finish this, my phone broke. I was hoping to upload some Ohio pictures but alas I can’t. My next few entries will be a little light on pictures. Part of the adventure folks. Bear with me. Photos will resume.
From York, I began a journey that would eventually end in Cincinatti. But the journey was a bit of a long one, and I got to explore a bit of the Ohio landscape before heading to my destination.
My first stop was in the wee hours of the morning in Columbus Ohio. Columbus has the distinction of being two firsts for me. It was the first place I got to try out a waffle house. Ever. Waffle house isn’t north of Ohio, and I’ve always wanted to try Grits. Never had it, and have been legitimately curious.
The waffle house was located across the street from the bus stop. After grabbing my stuff, I headed there. At seven in the morning, I was the only customer, and I got to order my grits. And my response to grits is well…it’s grits. It was there. I mean, I wish I could say something else, but it’s the truth. I’m glad I did it, but all in all, it wasn’t exactly what I was hoping for.
Beyond grits, I was pleasantly surprised with the place. Waffle House is a decent place to grab a meal at any time. The prices are good, and the food is decent. I enjoyed it and recommended it.
That was the good. The rest?
Columbus was empty to me. Looking on my GPS for a coffee shop or something to sit down was a bit of an adventure. I had to walk about two miles from where I was, and the whole time it was desolate. I didn’t expect to see a Tim Hortons at the light of the end of that tunnel, but it was really the only thing around. I’ve been told there’s a lot more to Columbus, but I never saw it. I just saw nothing.
After my walk, I sat at the bus stop. The bus stop is a giant glass house. Literally. It was an interesting set up. Kind of post apocalyptic in scope. I got visions of a story to write down the line as a result of this.
Then I got on the bus. I got to look at the rest of ohio for the most part.
I didn’t expect Ohio to be so nice. The common theme of my time in the states is that expectations are decieving. Things I expected to be ugly are actually incredible. Things that seem like they are going to be awesome turn out to be the other way. Eliminating expectations is one of the best things about this trip.
Ohio as you go further south gets
This was my last stop before I headed up to Michigan. I was looking forward to meeting the Fykes. I didn’t know what to expect about Cincinatti. Again, more surprises. Cincinatti is quite pretty. It’s a big city, and looks pretty too. It’s got a bit of grime to it. Definitely there are some rough parts, but downtown is amazing. I ended up getting dropped off there.
Rodney awaited me. Gave him a hug for the first time. And for what turned out to be a week, I was a fykus.
